How are you doing? How is the new year going for you so far? Are health concerns and resolutions still on your mind? I think we all have the best intentions to make improvements in our lives but somehow they fall out of mind and we go along as usual. Then something will come up to remind us – often an illness or a worsening of chronic symptoms. Ugh. I find it to be such a part of human nature to ignore these little reminders until it gets pretty bad. Until it interferes with our lives in a bigger way and we can no longer ignore it. That’s what happened to me. Last summer I was having some issues that came to a serious boiling point which led me to discover that I have an autoimmune condition (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). I immediately started on an anti-inflammatory diet that I knew was effective in these conditions and quickly reversed my symptoms! It was quite amazing. And such a relief to have the scary symptoms stop. Now, your body might not be as dramatic as mine, but you may likely have some issues… The best-selling over-the-counter medications are for headaches or migraines, upper respiratory concerns (allergies, colds, coughs), heartburn/acid reflux, and muscle or joint pain. What do all of these health problems have in common? In a nutshell, they are all issues of inflammation. And these are just the issues that people are treating with OTC medications. What about conditions like fatigue, diabetes or fibromyalgia? Hypertension or being overweight? Other autoimmune diseases like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or colitis? These are all inflammatory conditions as well. So what to do? Where to start? Simply, start to reduce the inflammation in your body. Check out my short article below for some tips on how to do this. I’ve put many of my patients on an anti-inflammatory diet and the results they’ve been experiencing have been just as remarkable as my own. I never really believed that food could be so problematic, especially in “healthy” eaters, but it is. But it’s not solely about the food. It’s about an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, really. I’ve been so impressed by the results I’ve seen in my patients and in my own life that I’m offering this information to you all as a more structured program: Detox 360. 360 degrees of health: your diet, your body and your lifestyle. 3 Simple Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle Tips 1. Drink more water. Most people are seriously and chronically dehydrated. Imagine your car running without enough oil…what happens? It overheats, right? This is pretty much what happens in the body that is dehydrated. Aim for 8 glasses of water each day and see if this makes you feel better. Obviously don’t leave them all until right before you go to bed or you’ll be up all night! 2. Get enough sleep. As with water, most people don’t get enough sleep either. The body does most of its repair and detoxification work at night, so this doesn’t happen at optimal levels if you’re not getting enough sleep. Start by going to bed 30-60 minutes earlier each night. 3. Eliminate 1 inflammation-producing food for 10-14 days. Like sugar, gluten or dairy. Pick just one of these and avoid it for a couple weeks and evaluate how you feel. Look for changes in energy, pain, sleep, digestion and even mood. It can be subtle or dramatic, so give it a chance. You might well be surprised. |
